What is a Chesterfield sofa?
A Chesterfield is a classic sofa with a back and arms of the same height, deep button tufting (capitonné), rolled arms and usually nailhead trim. It is named after Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, in 18th-century England.
According to legend, the Earl wanted a seat on which a gentleman could sit upright without creasing his suit. Today the Chesterfield is a symbol of libraries, gentlemen's clubs and luxury living rooms.
